The Flying Sage is excited to bring you yet another insightful and thought-provoking Expansion Seminar. This month we will be exploring the topic of Psychedelics & Addictions. Our panelists for this seminar include Kate Browning, Lindsay Billingsley and Mike Mathers.

  • What is the relationship between psychedelics and addiction?

  • How do psychedelics compare to traditional pharmaceutical treatments for addiction?

  • What is the current state of research on psychedelics and addiction, and what developments are on the horizon?

These are just a few of the types of questions we will be discussing during this seminar before we open things up to the audience to field any questions that you might have!

About Our Speakers:

Kate Browning

Kate Browning is a psychedelic integralist, ceremonialist, and multi-modal healing practitioner. She has provided health care in a variety of settings for over 30 years. A former Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, and psychotherapist, Kate is now a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, a consultant and educator in psychedelic psychotherapy, and a psychedelic therapy research clinician. Kate was a program coordinator and lecturer in Holistic Health studies at Langara College and a lecturer at the University of British Columbia, and is a curriculum consultant and faculty for Vancouver Island University’s Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies program. Kate is a founding and advisory board member of the Psychedelic Association of Canada and the Ketamine Assisted Therapies Association of Canada and has served as a clinical advisor to ethical, client-focused companies offering psychedelic therapies. Kate has presented at the Spirit Plant Medicine Conference, the Psychedelic Psychotherapy Forum, the World Congress of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, the Catalyst Summit, and the GrowUp Conference. Kate’s doctoral research is focused on the creation of an integral framework for assessment and treatment planning in psychedelic psychotherapy that allows for safer, personalized, and more inclusive care.

Lindsay Billingsley

Since 2005 Lindsay has worked in a variety of settings, including youth detox and support recovery, adult supported recovery, mandated residential treatment and after completing her Master of Social Work in 2011, as a concurrent clinical counsellor in the eastside of Vancouver supporting young people and their families. Continuing on her life path of providing guidance and support for those who have lost their connection to self and to community, Lindsay completed the Certificate in Psychedelic Assisted Therapies and Research at CIIS in 2020. Along with the completion of this certificate, Lindsay has also completed the MAPS MDMA for PTSD training program, the ATMA Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy program, Phoenix Academy’s Psychedelic Integration Retreat and continues to explore and expand her understanding of energy and the wider cosmology of the world through ongoing training in Reiki and Andean Shamanism.  Her intention is to combine her experience in plant medicine preparation and integration support with her experience as a clinical counsellor, clearing a path for clients to find healing by coming home to their essential selves.

Mike Mathers

Mike is a clinical counsellor with 15 years of experience in residential and outpatient treatment programs. He has served as the clinical director of a residential addiction treatment program, co-facilitated forensic groups for men convicted of sexual offences, led PTSD treatment groups for veterans and first responders and he has also run depression and anxiety treatment groups. Mike created Resilient Living Recovery (RLR), a virtual mindfulness-based group therapy program for treatment of mild to moderate substance use disorders and he is currently in private practice (Wellness Evolved Counselling) and a research therapist on a clinical trial using psilocybin-assisted motivational enhancement therapy for alcohol use disorder (study sponsor – Clairvoyant Therapeutics). He is also a MAPS protocol-trained therapist in the use of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD and he teaches online psychedelic-assisted therapy courses with ATMA Journey Centres.

Caleb Shearer

Caleb works as a group facilitator, and mens and family trauma coach. Caleb’s approach is heart-centered and existential, always encouraging the honoring of self through connection to others and integrity to the process of creating our individual truths.

Caleb earned a masters degree in social work (msw) from uvic, a bachelors degrees in religion and philosophy (multi-disciplinary), and a bachelors degree in social social work. Caleb has trained as a focusing oriented and narrative therapist, and practices from a somatic perspective.

Caleb practiced in the area of youth and family care for over a decade before creating the Solid Ground Trauma and Addiction Program as a non-12 step alternative to other addiction treatment models. Caleb is currently is the program director and group facilitator at a small treatment facility specializing in co-occuring disorders. Caleb is the head coach and owner of Guard-Recovery, a trauma-informed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program located in Vancouver, BC, and is a Brazilian jiujitsu coach and competitor.
